On March 31, 1917, the United States purchased the then Danish West Indies from Denmark for $25 million in gold. The group of islands, whose major islands include St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas, became know as the Virgin Islands of the United States.

 The Johnstons of Glynn, Co. Antrim, are found there in 1672, and George Johnston of Glynn, who was attainted in 1689 by the Parliament of James VII., is said to have been a near kinsman of Captain John Johnston of Drumconnell. Adairs in Chancery Rolls, Ireland

Adair Blair Johnston of Glynn, co Antrim, N. Ireland & Margaret, had dau, Anne Johnston bc.1776 d. 1842 Newtownards, Co. Down. Anne m.1790 George Birch b.1771. He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1790, was ordained in 1796, was curate of Larne, co. Antrim 1796-8 and perpetual curate of Comber until his death 28 Oct 1827. William, the son of George Johnston of Glynn, (Parish, south of Larne ?) was High Sheriff of Antrim in 1723. He is supposed to have been the elder bro of James, who m. Elizabeth LESLIE, dau of James Leslie, son of the Bishop of Down, and g-grandson of George, Earl of Rothes. James Johnston died 1707, leaving Henry and George, & 6 daus. The elder son Henry, b.1694, m. 1724, Ann Stewart, and left James, drowned at sea on a voyage from St. Croix; Adam Blair; and 4 daus. Adam Blair Johnston m. 1760, Margaret, dau of Robert Johnston of Kinlough House, and Aghadunvane, Co. Leitrim, & d. 1782. Margaret d. 1821. Children: (1) Robert Johnston, died s.p. (2) Henry Leslie Johnston, Captain Royal Marines, d.1794 at Ajaccio. (3) James Johnston, killed at sea nr Penang, 1805; (4) Peter Leslie Johnston, Lieutenant died s.p. (5) William Johnston, midshipman, drowned. (6) Randal Johnston b.1777, m. 1806 Isabella Birch of Ballybeen co. Down. (7) William McDonnell Johnston (8) Adam Blair Johnston, d. in West Indies.
